The AMC is excited to announce that it will be building a new AMC independent test centre in Melbourne for the AMC clinical exams.
The new test centre is part of our ongoing commitment to delivering the best possible standard of assessment of international medical graduates now and into the future.
It is expected that the new test centre will open towards the end of 2024. And, like the current test centre, will be a state-of-the-art facility that harnesses the best of technology and talent to improve the experience for candidates and deliver a high standard of assessment fairness, validity and reliability.
The current National Test Centre (NTC) will close on Monday 16 October 2023. All in-person clinical exams will continue up until this time. Online clinical exams will be available into 2024 to allow candidates to continue on their pathway for registration. While we build the new test centre, online clinical exam places will be available for scheduling throughout 2024.
The NTC is the only one of its kind in Australia and one of only a handful of facilities like it world-wide. Built in direct response to the ‘Lost in the Labyrinth’ report by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing, the centre has been the main site for the AMC clinical exam since 2013. The NTC has also been the assessment venue for other organisations, such as specialist medical colleges. The new AMC independent testing centre will be available for use by these organisations.
The AMC is committed to ensuring that all doctors who practice medicine in Australia are skilled, safe, and ethical practitioners. We also recognise that many international medical graduates who are wanting to practice medicine in Australia find the process complex and complicated. We are currently looking at ways that we can improve the experience for international medical graduates while ensuring the process remains a rigorous one.
A testing centre brings together exam candidates, examiners, simulated patients, administrators and ICT systems to provide a secure, consistent and standardised method of assessment. We recognise that the success of the NTC is due to the expertise and skill of the people involved. We look forward to continuing our strong relationships with simulated patients, invigilators, marshals and examiners as we move forward with in-person clinical exams.
If you are interested in future bookings of the new AMC test centre please contact us.
We will be conducting a survey of international medical graduates to better understand the experiences and challenges they face when navigating assessment pathways and entry into the Australian medical workforce.

We expect the new test centre to open towards the end of late 2024 and anticipate that in-person clinical exams to recommence in 2025.
Why is the current test centre closing?
The leasing arrangements on the current site end in October. We are taking the opportunity to establish a more permanent site that is fit for purpose now and into the future
