The Australian Medical Council is an organisation whose work impacts across the lands of Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian Medical Council acknowledges the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the original Australians and the Māori People as the tangata whenua (Indigenous) Peoples of Aotearoa (New Zealand). We recognise them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.

We pay our respects to them and to their Elders, both past, present and emerging, and we recognise their enduring connection to the lands we live and work on, and honour their ongoing connection to those lands, its waters and sky.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

What we do

We develop accreditation standards for medical programs across all phases of medical education.
We assess medical programs and their providers against the standards and accredit programs that meet these standards.
We assess international medical graduates seeking registration to practise medicine in Australia.

The AMC also:

  • assesses authorities in other countries to ensure they meet the standards to be accepted as a competent authority.
  • ensures culturally safe practice to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Māori peoples.
  • works with government and state and territory regulatory authorities to improve the standards of medical education.
  • assesses new medical specialties.

What we don’t do

  • Register doctors (this is a function of the Medical Board of Australia).
  • Have responsibility for medical employment in Australia.
  • Make decisions about Australia’s medical workforce.
  • Process applications for medical training in Australia.
  • Provide continuing medical education courses or other medical training.
