ECFMG’s Recognized Accreditation Policy

It is important to note that this recognition does not impact the application and verification processes undertaken by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). The AMC’s procedures remain unchanged, and applicants should continue to follow the established guidelines and requirements when establishing an AMC portfolio and/or progressing with the AMCs assessment processes as part of the Medical Board of Australia’s registration requirements.

Check eligible medical schools, medical degree titles (final medical diploma/primary qualification) and graduation years

International Medical Graduates who have a medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification) in clinical medicine and surgery awarded by a training institution as outlined in the steps below are eligible to proceed.

The AMC uses the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDoMS) as its primary source for a list of medical schools, their dates of operation, and degrees awarded. It supplements this information with information shared between the sponsors of the Directory.  The AMC’s eligibility requirements align with the eligibility requirements that Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)  lists through its sponsor note in WDoMS.

You must confirm the eligibility of your:

  • medical school; and
  • medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification) title; and
  • graduation year.

This is done in the following steps:

STEP 1. Confirm your medical school is eligible.

Check if your medical school is listed in WDoMS, by searching for the name of the country your medical degree (final medical diploma/ primary qualification) was obtained below. This will generate a list of the eligible medical schools in that country.

(Medical school must meet The ECFMG Sponsor Note requirements)

PLEASE NOTE: This tool is only relevant to medical institutions that issued your medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification). This search tool is not relevant to postgraduate qualifications. The information is based upon the most current information available, and is subject to change.

What if I’m unable to find my medical school, degree title and/or graduation year?

Contact your medical school. An official from your medical school will need to follow the steps in Requesting an ECFMG Sponsor Note. If the ECFMG determines that a medical school meets the requirements, it will include an ECFMG Sponsor Note in the school’s WDoMS listing.

STEP 2. Confirm the degree title and graduation year of your medical degree is eligible.

Once you have selected your medical school (Step 1) you will be directed to the WDoMS website. To determine the eligibility of your medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification), select the program details and sponsor note tabs and confirm your  medical school has been issued the ECFMG approved sponsor note, that the degree title and graduation year of your medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification) are included.

STEP 3. Read the sponsor note

The AMC’s eligibility requirements align with eligibility requirements that the ECFMG sets for its examination and the AMC has chosen not to write a separate sponsor note on each eligible school. You can check the eligibility of graduates of your medical school by checking if the medical school meets the ECFMG Sponsor Note requirements). This ECFMG webpage provides information on how your medical school can seek a listing and sponsor note, if it is not listed as eligible by the ECFMG. Alternatively, the medical school can seek an amendment to add or update information regarding medical school names, degree titles and/or graduation years by following the process provided in the above link.

For detailed information on the above steps, refer to the AMC Candidate Account Guide, see Check eligible medical schools, medical degree titles (final medical diploma/primary qualification) and graduation years.
