The Australian Medical Council is an organisation whose work impacts across the lands of Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian Medical Council acknowledges the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the original Australians and the Māori People as the tangata whenua (Indigenous) Peoples of Aotearoa (New Zealand). We recognise them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.

We pay our respects to them and to their Elders, both past, present and emerging, and we recognise their enduring connection to the lands we live and work on, and honour their ongoing connection to those lands, its waters and sky.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

The AMC Review of Accreditation Standards for Primary Medical Programs (medical schools) began in 2021. A key feature of the review has been a shared sovereignty process which acknowledges the right to self-determination for developing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Māori health and cultural safety related content.

The consultation on detailed proposals, including those related to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Māori health and cultural safety, ran between September and November 2022. As part of the consultation correspondence, the chairs of the AMC Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Māori Standing Committee and AMC Medical School Accreditation Committee endorsed the shared sovereignty process in a letter to stakeholders.

On 28 October 2022, the chairs held a seminar discussion about the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Māori health and cultural safety standards development process, the resulting proposed changes to the standards, and the importance of this work to improving the health outcomes of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Māori people. A recording of the session is available below.
