In June 2025, Health Ministers approved Genetic Pathology as a new field of specialty practice within the existing specialty of Pathology.
The AMC can now assess and accredit training and education programs in Genetic Pathology. Organisations that have an education and training program that it believes can comply with the AMC Standards for Assessment and Accreditation of Specialist Medical Programs may apply for accreditation.
The Standards for accreditation and information about the accreditation process can be found on the AMC website.
This approval follows the AMC’s detailed assessment of the proposal for recognition, and its advice to the Medical Board of Australia who recommended that Health Ministers approve Genetic Pathology as a new field of specialty practice.
Once an approved qualification in Genetic Pathology is established, medical practitioners with this qualification can apply to the Medical Board of Australia for specialist registration in Genetic Pathology. Only medical practitioners with specialist registration in Genetic Pathology can use the protected title ‘specialist genetic pathologist’.
The full List of specialties, fields of specialty practice and related specialist titles for the medical profession is published on the Medical Board’s Registration standards webpage.
