If participation on a Saturday conflicts with your religious practice, contact our clinical examinations section to make alternative arrangements. You will need to submit documentary evidence in support of your case for special scheduling.
ApplicationsWhen are the examinations and closing dates?
See details of examinations and closing dates.
How much is the examination fee?
The full examination fee is A$2,510.00.
How many positions are there in each examination?
About 1000 places are available in each calendar year.
Why is the wait so long, and why are available positions limited?
The number of positions in the examinations depends on the availability of suitable hospitals.
How long is my MCQ result valid for?
There is no time limit on any part of the AMC examination process.
What is the scheduling process for the examination?
If there are more candidates than clinical examination places, we prioritise candidates along the following lines:
- First attempt candidates have priority over repeat attempt candidates.
- The scheduling of first attempt clinical candidates takes into consideration the time since they sat and qualified at the MCQ examination.
- Candidates are ranked in merit order based on their overall score in the MCQ examination.
- Candidates with fewer repeat attempts have priority over candidates with more repeat attempts
How long will I have to wait between passing the MCQ examination and attempting the clinical examination?
The average waiting time is about 9 to 16 months.
If I fail, how long will I have to wait before I can sit again?
Due to the scheduling process for the clinical examination (as listed above), it is not possible to specify an average wait between examination attempts.
What is the AMC doing to reduce the waiting period?
We have reviewed the clinical examination to streamline the format and accommodate more candidates. In the past 10 years, we have doubled the number of candidates examined per year.
When scheduling, does the AMC give consideration to candidates with special circumstances, such as family or work problems?
We give special consideration to candidates in exceptional circumstances, where this will not disadvantage others.
PreparationWhat resources does the AMC produce to help candidates prepare for the clinical examination?
In association with the Educational Resource Centre of the Royal Children's Hospital, we have produced a video / DVD of the multi-station structured clinical assessments, showing three sample stations with two candidates performing at each station. The video has a running time of around 130 minutes.
We have produced a list of suggested text books for candidates to review.
The Examination Specifications Booklet details the examination format and has sample examination stations for each discipline.
Several organisations conduct bridging courses to assist candidates preparing for the AMC clinical examination.
ExaminationWhat is the current structure of the clinical examination?
The examination consists of a multi-station structured clinical assessment of clinical skills. The AMC Examination Specifications Booklet details the examination format.
Will I be required to examine live patients?
There will be a mixture of real and simulated patients in the examination.
What equipment am I required to take to an examination?
Most equipment will be provided for you; however, you should take along your own stethoscope and hammer.
What are the exact dates of my examination?
We will let you know whether you have gained a clinical position about 10 days after the closing date for the series you applied for. When you confirm your position, we will advise you of the provisional examination date. Report times and examination locations will be confirmed closer to the examination date.
Does the AMC book accommodation?
No. You are responsible for your own travel and accommodation arrangements.
ResultsWhy can't I get my results over the phone?
For security reasons, we do not issue results over the phone.
Can I get my results reviewed?
All results have already been reviewed before release. They have also been confirmed at a meeting of the panel of examiners after the clinical examination session, on the basis of your performance in the clinical examination. The decision of the panel is final.
Can I appeal my results?
You may only submit an appeal to the Board of Examiners if you believe that the procedural requirements (as specified in the current AMC Examinations Specifications Booklet) were not followed in a significant way or to a significant extent, or if your performance was impaired by significant deficiencies in the examination procedures beyond your control.
The Board of Examiners cannot change a fail grade to a pass grade or exempt a candidate from any other requirements of the clinical examination.
Contact the AMC Secretariat if you want to be sent a copy of the appeals guideline and an appeal application form, or download them.
