Competent Authorities Model FAQ

A. Eligibility for Competent Authority Pathway Assessment

Am I eligible for Competent Authority Pathway assessment if:

1. I have only the basic qualification (eg. PLAB Exam but no GMC approved supervised training/ USMLE but no GME/NZREX but no rotations)?
NO. To be eligible international medical graduates (IMGs) must have ALL the requirements (basic qualification PLUS prescribed supervised training/internships/residency.)

2. I am registered in the UK but have no PLAB PLUS supervised training?
NO. You must have sat and passed PLAB PLUS supervised training in the UK or a Competent Authority country approved by the GMC or have degree from a GMC accredited University in the UK, PLUS supervised training approved by the GMC.

3. I am a UK graduate but have no supervised training in the UK or approved by the GMC?
NO. You must have all the requirements for general registration in the UK – accredited degree PLUS supervised training in the UK or in a Competent Authority country approved by the GMC.

4. I am a UK graduate but have completed supervised training in Australia?
YES. Provided that supervised training in Australia has been approved by the GMC.

5. I have completed rotation for one year as required by the MCNZ, six months in Surgery, six months in Psychiatry. At that time it was not a requirement by the MCNZ to do the four rotations equivalent to the internship?

You are NOT eligible, unless you can provide evidence from MCNZ that six months surgery/six months psychiatry was acceptable for registration.

6. How do I know if the training I have done is approved by the GMC?
You will need to provide evidence from the GMC that you have completed the 12 months training.

B. Transitional provisions

1. If I have less than 12 months registration and supervised practice in Australia can I get an Australian Medical Council (AMC) Certificate?

NO. You must complete 12 months supervised practice, however you can apply for advanced standing towards the AMC Certificate.

2. If I am Competent Authority Pathway eligible, am registered and working in a supervised position AND has applied for AMC MCQ or Clinical Examination, can I get a refund?
YES. A full refund will be available to any IMG who is eligible to proceed under the Competent Authority Pathway assessment process.

3. IF I am Competent Authority eligible and have previously sat an AMC MCQ or Clinical Examination, am I entitled to a refund?

NO. A refund will not be paid for examinations that have already been completed.

4. If I fail the Competent Authority supervised assessment, am I still eligible to proceed with the AMC Examination?
YES. The Competent Authority Pathway assessment does not preclude an Inernational medical graduate (IMG) proceeding through the AMC Examination at a later date.

5. If I am scheduled for the AMC Clinical Examinations and I am eligible under the Competent Authority Model, should I withdraw?

If you are Competent Authority Pathway eligible you will be granted Advanced Standing towards the AMC Certificate. However, you will still be required to complete 12 months supervised practice in an Australian clinical position before you will be eligible for the AMC Certificate and general registration. The time it will take to complete the requirements under the Competent Authority Pathway model will depend on how long you have been working. If you have been working less than 12 months, you will need to complete the twelve months. If you have worked more than twelve months you will be able to proceed directly to the AMC Certificate, subject to a supporting statement from the relevant medical board.
