In December 2005, the Minister for Health and Ageing, The Hon Tony Abbott MHR, informed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) that he did not consider a case had been made for rural and remote medicine to be recognised as a medical specialty.

The AMC completed its Stage 1 assessment of the case for the recognition of rural and remote medicine in 2005.
